Lane Tech Cheerleaders Win Citywide Competition (PHOTO)

This is the first time the varsity team has taken first place since 2007, and now, after all the hard work, the girls are champions.

The Lane Tech Varsity Cheerleading Team jumped, flipped and shouted their way to first place in Chicago, the first time the school has done so since 2007.

Head Cheer Coach and St. Edward Grade School teacher Barbara Carabio says the varsity team took second the past three years, but at March 23’s CPS "City" Cheerleading Competition, they stole first.

It was the perfect ending for the team’s 11 seniors.

“As the team waited backstage to perform for the very last time this season they were feeling both nervous and confident,” Carabio said in an email. “The coaches did the usual good luck ritual and left the team to do what they came to do! They hit a perfect routine by executing all their jumps, stunts, and tumbling perfectly.

“Needless to say, Lane Tech Varsity took 1st place in the large varsity competition!” Carabio continued. “Their motto this year was ‘prACTice like champions,’ and now they are CHAMPIONS!”

The final competition came after a long string of invites and many more competitions starting in early January.
