Owners of New Roscoe Village Restaurant Seek to Make it 'Go-To' Neighborhood Spot

Excited for the mysterious new restaurant on Roscoe and Damen? Read on for details on what you can expect and when.

If all goes as planned, a new Roscoe Village restaurant in a prime downtown location should be ready to welcome its first diners by early fall.

Renovations to and new ownership of the former Mulligan's building at Roscoe Street and Damen Avenue will make way for new eatery, Commonwealth. An aggressive construction schedule should lead to the restaurant opening in early October, managing operations partner Kevin Metz said.

"We want to get people excited about what's going on in that corner of Roscoe Village," Metz said.

The restaurant will be an American-style tavern, with a small and focused menu, to feature "old comfort classics made with good ingredients," he says. Although the menu is not finalized yet, he and business partner Matthew Baldino are working with chefs to create the cuisine.

Mulligan's Pub closed almost three weeks ago, but plans for Commonwealth have been in the works for almost a year now. Although the renovation permit at the location pegs the cost at $195,000, Metz says the entire project should come in around $325,000.

When the eatery opens, Metz and Baldino plan to keep long hours.

"The tavern should be bright and welcoming by day and more comfortable by night," Metz says. "We'll offer coffee and pastries in the morning, have dinner and beer in the evening, and people can come in for cocktails at night."

Stay updated on the opening of the restaurant at Commonwealth's website.

"The area needs a great go-to spot, and we are excited to offer that and become a part of the neighborhood," Metz says.
