Flies, Mosquitos Found at Dunkin' Donuts: Health Inspections

Chicago Health Department inspectors also visited Copper House, Mariano's and the newly-opened Bartoli's Pizza.

Patch examined inspection reports in North Center. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants and businesses can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious violations.

Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended. All inspections are done on a routine canvass, unless otherwise noted.

Mariano’s Fresh Market, 3350 N. Western Ave.
Inspection date: June 4
Results: Pass
Violations: A complaint brought health inspectors to the grocery store where they found food debris along the floors. Dust and grease build-up was also found on the hot foods section and on the fan in the seafood section.

Copper House, 4337 N. Lincoln Ave.
Inspection date: June 20
Results: Pass
Violations: A complaint brought inspectors to this Northcenter bar, where a build-up of grease and dead inspects were found on the light shield in the prep area.

Floors and walls were also dirty and the shelves in the walk-in cooler were covered in rust. Management needs to clean “a build-up of encrusted food” from the cooler doors and ice machine.

Employees were also caught storing personal items in the prep room

Dunkin’ Donuts, 3535 N. Western Ave.
Inspection date: June 24
Results: Fail
Violations: This visit was the result of a complaint where the inspector found more than 10 small flies and mosquitoes in the windowsills and glass front door. A serious citation was issued because of this.

The inspector also found a broken lid on the garbage dumpster, which prevented it from closing properly, earning the restaurant another serious citation.

Management needs to clean the interior panel of the ice machine and microwave, along with the mold-like substance on the three-compartment sink.

Cracked floor tiles also need to be replaced.
